| The Artist's Message . . . Hands and eyes are extremely important to artists. Actually, they are the primary tools for everyone. After I had surgery on my hand, I spent days reading about the meaning and language of hands, mainly in these two books: The Language of the Goddess by Marijah Gimbutas and The Women's Dictionary of Symbols and Sacred Objects by Barbara G. Walker. Hand blessings are deeply rooted in many ancient traditions and faiths. Some are still used today. I wanted to figure out a way to apply these meanings to dolls and wearable art. Now, I simply wanted to share them with fellow artists. The patterns are FREE to copy or download for your personal use. I hope you have fun making hands, selling them, and giving them away as gifts! Although the pattern is free for your use, it is not to be copied for sale. I would like to request that you write for permission to teach this project in a class (something most pattern makers do). |

Mano Pantea The Hand of Blessing was a Roman sign of "The Hand of the All Goddess." It was later adopted by Christian clergymen and in Islam it is called the Hand of Fatima. Egypt used it to evoke the protection of the parental spirits. The index finger is the Mother-Goddess, the middle finger is the Father-Godhead, and the thumb with an acorn seed is the Child, Horus, the newborn sun of each day. |
| Yoga Mudra For meditation the index finger touches the thumb to show the passing of wisdom's energy from teacher to student. It represents the unity of the mother and child under the protection of the Triple Goddess who brings security, loveand good fortune. |

| Suggested ways to use these patterns: As doll hands that are gesturing a blessing. The hands on your doll can have something to say. They can be more than just paddle - fins hanging at the end of the doll's arms. Reduce or enlarge the sizes given here and cut out a paper hand to match the size and replace the hand on the doll pattern you are using. Use the wrist lines as guides to get a logical placement of the hand on the arm. The grain lines need not be followed - instead rely on grain lines suggested on your doll arm pattern. Use the same flesh fabrics you are using for the face. As a Wearable Art Pin or Pendant/Ornament. Cut out the largest pattern without the wrist lines - just use the hand outline. Grain lines are a suggestion for placement on the fabric which can be any woven cotton or blend print of medium weight or velvet, etc. * These patterns are templates without seam allowances. Draw around the shape with pencil, pen, disappearing ink pen, or quilter's chalk. This is the stitching line to sew with the machine before cutting out the fabric hand. Freezer paper is great to use for the templates because it is thin enough to lay on the pattern to trace the shape and then it can be cut out and ironed onto the fabric for tracing or sewing the outline. It can be used over again, too. Two important tools for doll making are used here - a small tube turner and a small stuffing fork. If you don't have them and cannot find them at a local sewing shop, write to: Virginia Robertson Enterprises Box 357, Dolores, CO 81323 Or call 970-882-3389 Ask for the current catalog. |
